Teaching Kids To Preserve And Protect The Earth

Sunday, October 2, 2011
Last Friday, on the last day of September, my daughter, Zoe's school ended their Science Month celebration. It has been one month filled with activities geared towards teaching the school children about not just Science but about health as well.

The school prepared several activities each week and they include a Good Grooming Day, Cleaning Day, Cooking Day, Bring-Your-Pet Day and a Culminating Activity. Both of my girls participated in all those activities. Although my Ziya is homeschooled, she is technically still enrolled in the school and we follow their curriculum. She still goes to school in order to participate in activities such as those done during Science month. I believe that it is important for kids to be taught about how things work in the world, especially about keeping clean, taking care of animals and plants and the environment in general. I am very happy that their school does these activities to complement what we also teach them here at home.

Aside from those activities, Zoe, being in the fourth grade, was asked to submit a two-page research paper on ways to preserve and protect the Earth. This was her first ever research paper so she wasn't sure how to go about it. I guided her, of course. She researched information from her old Science books and I helped her research for photos on the Internet to go with them. She was pretty happy with the outcome. Not bad for a first try, if I should say so myself. For me, the most important thing really are the lessons that she has learned from those information she was able to gather and that hopefully she will take them to heart. After all, now is the best time to teach our kids how to protect the Earth, while there's still time to save it.

Goodbye, Typhoon Pedring!

Wednesday, September 28, 2011
It's the rainy season in our part of the world and that means it's that time of the year when we all have to prepare ourselves to experience several storms to wreck havoc in our country. After Typhoon Ondoy hit the country two years ago, you would think that people have learned their lesson already and that improvements would have been made to help the country prepare better. Unfortunately, I think that's still not the case. Typhoon Pedring, which entered our country a couple of days ago, is now on its way out, but not without causing damage to a lot of people and property.

I watched the news earlier today and was dismayed to see a lot of people who had to be either evacuated or rescued due to severe flood or landslide in their area. Until now, there are a lot of areas that are still flooded and people who can't go back to their homes yet. It reminds me of the time while I was still living at my dad's house and a really strong typhoon hit the country as well. The street where my dad's house stands is really prone to flooding. That time, the street became flooded just several minutes after the storm came. We weren't expecting for the water to get in the house because it never happened before. Unfortunately, there's a first time for everything. The good thing was that we had a second floor and so we were able to save some stuff by moving them upstairs. However, there were still a lot of stuff that got soaked because we couldn't haul them all up. We were drying furniture, as well as pages and pages of documents from my dad's office for weeks!!!! It was terrible.

Luckily, the house that my family and I live in now is situated in an area that is not prone to flooding. Plus, we live at the third floor and so we would be safe and dry in case there is a flood. However, that doesn't mean we're not affected by seeing other people suffer. All these people who have suffered due to the floods and landslides are part of the reason why I put up this blog. I want to inspire people to actually do something to prevent all these things from happening repeatedly by being serious about helping save the Earth. We all know there are measures we can take to prevent floods and landslides. However, some people just don't care and I don't get that. I mean, how many typhoons will it take before we all seriously take action? How many more people have to get hurt? How many people have to lose their homes and other valuables? How many more people have to die?

According to the news, although Typhoon Pedring is now exiting the country, another typhoon is poised to enter the country. That is very, very bad news. I'd hate to see more devastation.

Welcome to Green Mama Monologues

Hi everyone! Welcome to my second blog, Green Mama Monologues. I've been wanting to launch this new blog for months now but didn't get around to it until now because life as a mom of three is just really hectic. I've prepared this blog for a couple of weeks already but got to do this welcome post only now. Welcome to this blogs' first official post. Yippee!

So, who's the Green Mama and what is this blog all about? You can click the Who's the Green Mama page tab to learn more about that. Basically, though, I wanted another blog that had a niche because my first blog is more about parenting and children in general. Since my family and I have also made a conscious effort to try and live a greener, more sustainable life, I decided it would be a great idea to document that. For us, it hasn't always been easy to choose the greener choices because sometimes it would be more expensive. For a one-income family, we most often have to choose the cheaper alternative so that we can purchase more with our money. However, having children, I have come to realize that our decisions doesn't always have to be based on what's good for now but most importantly on what's good for the future. Definitely, we want our kids to live in a greener world, where they can breathe cleaner air and eat healthier food, etc. I have also realized that in the long run, we actually save more by choosing the more greener choice. So, little by little we are changing our ways in order to make the world a better place (cliche much?).

In this blog, I will write about all things green and natural. I wish to be able to write about our entire journey to living green. I may feature products we use or stores we visit. In the future, I hope to be able to review (paid or unpaid) new green products and maybe do some giveaways as well. Definitely, I will feature events and other noteworthy environmental issues and current events. Mostly, I wish to be able to help and inspire other families wishing to be greener as well. In the end, even if I inspire just one, that one person may inspire others and that will make a ripple effect. Here's hoping that we will make a positive impact on the world. So, join us on our exciting journey to living a greener, more natural life.
